One Hell of a Character Arc

Firstly, allow me to pat you on the back. Well done. To make it this far you’ve literally done the impossible and won a game so improbable, it makes the lottery look like a guaranteed win.

What am I talking about? Well let’s get the graphic stuff out of the way first and then we’ll talk.

How old are you? Really? You’re doing well; what’s your secret? Anyway, lets go back exactly that many years, and then about nine months previous to that – yep, I’m taking about the moment of your conception.

Here’s the graphic bit, I’ll try and be quick. You, at one point, were two entities; sperm and egg. Now the egg bit was predetermined while you mother was still in the womb herself, however the chances of it being your egg that was fertilised was about 1:400. Now the other half of you is even more improbable. The chances of it being that sperm cell was about 1:60,000,000 at best. So already, the chances of that event happening was about 1:2,400,000,000. Pretty poor odds yeah?

But hang on. That’s just the chances of you existing. Let’s not forget that your parents also had to beat those odds. And your grandparents, great grandparents, etc. So for every previous generation, you’re basically compiling the odds of you even existing to incredibly, almost impossibly, poor levels.

And yet here you are. And if we throw in the odds of everything that happened to you after birth, the odds of you existing as the person you are right now is pretty much impossible.

You’re right, a pat on the back is no where near enough appreciation.

So if life’s getting tough just remember; you’ve already done the impossible.

And so has everyone else around you.

And that was before you had the brains you have now.
